A colleague of mine who until recently was part owner of an apartment building received today a copy of a magazine aimed at apartment owners, and I thought that the cover was a work of art.

I particularly like the juxtaposition of “YOU Can End Rent Control” with “Happy Thanksgiving”. The article on rent control, unsurprisingly, was about “The California Property Owners and Farmland Protection Act”, which would eliminate rent control in California and is being marketed as an antidote to the Kelo eminent domain decision. Kelo was pretty appalling and I’m not against measures protecting property owners from such an abuse—however, the groups behind this proposition aim to use outrage over Kelo to push through a variety of other changes, such as removing rent control. It’s not as bad as Proposition 90, from a few years ago, but it’s still bad. And no, it’s not inconsistent to be against Kelo and for rent control, because not everything has to be viewed through a strict “property rights” lens.
