British Military Pays Detention Death Settlement

I wish I could have found a source for this other than the Times, but this article discusses the British Ministry of Defence paying out almost three million sterling to the father of an Iraqi killed in British custody in Basra.

The conduct is truly appalling, of course, but somehow the fact that they’ve been forced to settle seems like something that’s not that likely to happen here in the United States, given equivalent cases—here, those responsible would probably have “immunity” thanks to agreements the US invasion force have forced upon the Iraqis.
